News & Events The Longnor Wood Blog
We are pleased to officially announce the completion of our new development. We have had some massive set backs with the weather being figuratively and literally beastly but we have prevailed (albeit a little behind schedule). What was formerly the tent field now contains six statics, two pods and four tent pitches. The statics are perfect for an intimate break for two, outside they have their own sun deck, complete with hot tub. Inside as well as having all the usual fixtures and fittings of a fully equipped van, there is also a dressing room. The pods have a decked area for sitting outside and enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings of the park. Inside they have en-suite shower room, television and a kitchenette all kept cosy with under-floor heating. Of course we have still kept some space for our traditional campers with four different pea gravel plots to choose from.
This process began about two years ago with applying for planning. After various consultations with the Peak Park planning authority we got to a plan that we were both happy with. As some of our regulars will know, we only leveled and re-turfed this field for last season. This meant the first stage was to undo some of that work. I can tell you from personal experience, this was back breaking the first time round. In the initial month, which was October 2017, we thought that the wet weather was our biggest issue. What halcyon days they were!
Then the ‘Beast from the East’ hit us. Ninety mile an hour winds. Minus twenty wind chill factor. Twelve inches of snow. Not nice conditions to be working in, plus the constant need to plow so we weren’t shut off. This was a very trying time for all of the team here who went above and beyond to finish. Unfortunately, we did run out of time. Even though this was extended by a weekend with the freezing conditions stopping almost all of the water around the site. The first time we have shut since owning the site.
Hard work and perseverance did pay off however. We have now officially completed the development. Whilst there have been a few customers that have made use of it already, there were a few bits that were left hidden that needed completing that are now done.
Hopefully we will see many of you over the course of this season to try out our new types of accommodation.
The annual Bakewell Carnival is on this Saturday the 1st of July. There is much more to this event than just a parade though the town. It is a time for fancy dress and racing! If you are not a local then this event will probably seem very strange, but it is all done in good spirits and can be quite an experience.
Thursday night sees the children’s raft race, where they ride rafts they build themselves down the river Wye.
Friday night is when the adults come out to play with the Welly and Wheelbarrow race. The idea is to race round the pubs of Bakewell with one person in a wheelbarrow and the other pushing, both in wellies, once at the pub they drink half a pint and then swap. There are prizes for fancy dress as well as winning the race itself.
Saturday itself is the day of the actual carnival and the parade closes the roads through Bakewell from 3 until 4:30 in the afternoon. It is a heady mix of costumes, floats and cross dressing! All in all it can be an entertaining experience, and something a bit different on your visit to the Peak District.
Sunday sees the Duck Race which is a more relaxed way to close out the Carnival Week. Rubber ducks are released down the river to see which one makes it to the finish line first.
If these events seem like something you may enjoy doing then it is worth going down to the picturesque market town of Bakewell. If not then you can escape the madness at the quiet tranquillity offered at Longnor Wood.
Some of the more eagle-eyed customers out there amongst you may have noticed a different look to the website, that is because it is an entirely new one! We took the decision to make a new one so that we had more control of the content and we could keep it relevant for you. It went live on the new site on the 26th of January but have slowly been making slight adjustments so didn’t feel the time was right to draw too much attention to it. It is now functioning in all of the main areas, but that is not to say we are done with it! There will be many exciting updates and additional features that we will keep you up to date with.
As well as a new website there is a new booking system. With the new system you have pictures of the unit that you are going to book, make additional payments online, have access to extra features, automatic discounts where applicable and it will now remind you about paying the balance.
The website has been designed by ourselves so we would welcome any feedback and suggestions that you may have (we will use our limited technical skills to try and do them!).
We hope you enjoy your time on our website but we are still here to help if you need it
